The underlying philosophy of the Criminology and Security Studies degree programme is to train and produce graduates equipped with techniques capable of foiling security lapses and combating increasingly sophisticated organised crime. The Department was established to address national needs in capacity building within the police, prison, and private security sectors, aiming to minimise crime and criminal behaviour. The course also aims to fulfil the national requirement for enhanced security by preparing students to assume leadership roles in security management systems across government, corporate sectors, and private security agencies. It provides theoretical and practical strategies tailored to address national security needs and offers a comprehensive understanding directly relevant to these institutions. Additionally, it equips students with research techniques and contributes to institutional reforms, particularly in criminology and security studies. The programme targets students aspiring to careers in police services, forensic investigations, human rehabilitation services, and security management. Consequently, graduates of this programme will be prepared to assume managerial positions in the public sector, particularly within the police service, prisons, and probation departments. Moreover, the private sector stands to benefit from graduates’ expertise in security management and related roles. Overall, this programme is expected to complement and sustain the professionalisation of the police, prison, and probation services.
